Carcassonne is mostly renowned as a fortified medieval city; but this rocky spur has been occupied by man since the 6th century BC, first as a Gallic settlement and a fortified Roman city from the 3rd - 4th century AC. The Visigoths seized the oppidum in the 5th century, then the Saracens who remained for about thirty years before being expelled by the Francs. Restored by Violley le Duc in the 19th century, the city reached the consecration in 1997, by obtaining its classification on the list of sites of the world heritage of the humanity by the UNESCO and the lower city of Carcassonne "La Bastide Saint-Louis" is listed as a conservation area.
