Kerloas menhir - Plouarzel
The tallest menhir in France still standing.
Over 5000 years old and 9.5m high, this standing stone, nicknamed the "Hunchback" (An Tor) due to two protuberances, has inspired countless legends and also gave rise to a strange tradition during the 19C. Young married couples are said to have come and rubbed their naked bodies against its humps: the men in order to have sons and the women to ensure they had authority in the home!
Pointe de Penhir - Camaret-sur-Mer
The Pointe de Penhir is the finest of the four headlands of the Crozon peninsula.
The 70m-drop at the end of the Crozon peninsula commands an unforgettable view: below are the great isolated rocks called the Tas de Pois (literally, pile of peas!); on the left is the Pointe de Dinan; on the right, the Pointe de St-Mathieu and the Pointe du Toulinguet with its little lighthouse. Inland is Menez-Hom, and in fine weather it is possible to glimpse the Pointe du Raz and the Ile de Sein to the left, with the island of Ouessant to the right.
Memorial du Finistere - Brest
In remembrance of Finisterians killed during the War.
Accessible to people of restricted mobility.
In the fort of Montbarrey, named after one of Louis XVI's ministers, this memorial to the Finisterians who died between 1939 and 1946, "during and because of the War".
Pointe des Espagnols - Roscanvel
A perfect spot to gaze on the Sound of Brest.
This point, opposite Brest, owes its name to the Spanish garrison which occupied the area for a brief period in 1594 in order to help the League against Henri IV. The latter's troops defeated the League six months after it landed. Today, the site commands a splendid view of the Sound of Brest, the Elorn estuary, Albert-Louppe Bridge, Iroise Bridge, the peninsula of Plougastel at the tip of the Pointe de l'Armorique, and the far end of the roadstead.
Getting There:
By Car: from Brest, take the road to Plouzane/Le Conquet, then the D789 to Plougonvelin and follow signs to "Pointe St-Mathieu" (4km).
