Local Attractions:
Oze House - Alencon
A 15C dwelling.
There is deep-seated legend that the future Henri IV slept here in 1576. Well, why not?
Notre-Dame church - Alencon
A chuch started under the the English occupation on the site of a Roman sanctuary.
The three-panelled door is the work of Jean Lemoine (1490-1506). The nave covered with lierne arches and tiercerons is truly delightful. You must see the stained-glass windows (made around 1530) and if you go to Lisieux, you can continue your pilgrimmage - Therese Martin was baptised here on the left side aisle of the first chapel.
St. Teresa's chapel - Alencon
A Chapel adjoining the childhood bedroom of Therese Martin.
Everyone knows that Ste-Therese was born here of the 2nd January 1873. The chapel adjoins the bedroom where Therese of Lisieux first saw the light of day.
Museum of lace at Alencon point and Leclerc museum
A varied and widespread collection... but all very well explained.
It was in fact here that General Leclerc had set up his HQ, which has documents on the epic 2nd DB, from the landing at Utah beach to Strasbourg, and a statue of the General, set next to an open book. On the groundfloor, the history of Alencon lace is told alongside a remarkable lace collection.
St.Leonard's Church - Alencon
A church built between 1489 and 1505.
Started by Duke Rene, this church was completed by his widower, Marguerite de Lorraine.
Ancien chateau des ducs - Alencon
Jean le Beau built this in the 14C and 15C.
The main tower called the "crowned tower" is a narrow round tower that tops a machicolated tower. Two other towers are visible from the street to the chateau. As for the interior, you may hope you never see it; today it is the Alencon prison.
Museum of Fine Arts and lace - Alencn
Lace from Venice, lace from Alencon.
Accessible to people of restricted mobilitySuperb lace collections here, you can see a fine repertoire of Italian, French and Flemish lace (from Le Puy, Chantilly, Valenciennes, Bayeux) . Needless to say there is a strong emphasis on the locally made lace. The Fine Art section shows paintings from the 17C and 18C French school (Phillipe de Champaigne, Fantin-Latour, Courbet).
The village- Saint-Ceneri-le-Gerei
This small village of the Alpes Mancelles boasts fine stone houses and a lovely Romanesque church.
The small charming village of St-C?neri-le-G?rei inspired more than one artist. The church perched high up, the bridge spanning the Sarthe and the old stone houses form a remarkably well-preserved setting. From the East end of the Romanesque church, one gets a bird's-eye view of the River Sarthe lined with small gardens. Inside, the chancel houses fine frescoes representing Christ in Majesty, the Virgin Mary welcoming the Chosen within her great cloak and the crowning of St Ceneri, a mysterious 7C monk.
The village of St-Leonard-des-Bois
A tourist centre well situated in the heart of the Normandie-Maine regional nature park.
The village of St-Leonard-des-Bois lies inside a deep meander of the River Sarthe. Framed by steep slopes covered with heather, it enjoys a better position than any other tourist centre in the Alpes Mancelles. The church, built on the site of St Leonard's oratory, houses an Entombment of the Virgin Mary comprising fourteen terracotta figures (17C).
Sees Cathedral
One of the finest edifices erected in the 13C and 14C by the Norman Gothic school.
Sees's Gothic Cathedral, built in the 13C and 14C, encountered many vicissitudes as the West front shows with its vast porch supported by heavy buttresses. Inside, note the large arches of the nave, the chancel and the transept lit by magnificent stained-glass windows and rose-windows of the late 13C. The fine marble high altar, dating from Louis XVI's time (1754-1793), is the work of Brousseau, the diocesan architect. It features a gilt-bronze low relief representing the Entombment.
Manoir de Courboyer-maison du parc - Noce
A resume of the Perche region's heritage.
This stunning manorhouse (15 and 16C) presents the region's natural and architectural heritage. An exhibtion on the history of the Perche region shows visitors all that it has to offer. It also explains the organisation and decoration of the region's houses. The manor's 60ha domain is also ideal for enjoying a stroll, and you may well come across the famous Percheron horse, the Cotentin donkey or his relative from Normandy. A food hall and a shop with a wide variety of quality local produce are testament to the area's gastronomical wealth.
