Local Attractions:
Built in 1222 by Raymond VII Count of Toulouse, this fortified village “ancestor of the bastides” is a group of very old houses built close together along narrow streets around a central square. Castelnau de Montmiral means New Castle of the Mountain from where you can see (“mirar” = to see, in Occitan).
Nestling in a protected wooded valley, the castle of Mayragues, built in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, is one of the only surviving examples of regional fortified architecture; it has a half timbered gallery and corbelled construction, on top of a stone structure, which functioned as a pathway to patrol the castle (chemin de ronde).
Beside it is a picturesque dove cote, with columns, in the Languedoc style, from which, in centuries gone by, the waste product served as manure for the vines. It was in a state of complete abandonment when the present owners took it on in 1980, and their patient works of restoration, in sympathy with the tradition of the place, were rewarded in 1998 by the Grand Prix of Old French Houses. The castle is listed as an Historic Monument and is open to the public on National Heritage Days.
Albi
“A ship built of bricks”, “Faith’s Fortress”, “An Italian town”
Albi has three great attractions: the Cathedral of Sainte Cécile, the Palais de la Berbie (housing the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum) and the Old Bridge, as well as its charming streets.
In the morning light they are a bright pink, in the evening, dark red and, at the hottest part of the day, they are almost empty. There are houses with half-timbering, with corbelled vaulting, narrow passageways, cobblestones, all the picturesque charm of the Middle Ages in the warm colours of the south.
