Le Moulin de Mombreux - Lumbres, Nord - Pas de Calais
Address:
Route de Bayenghem, Lumbres, France
Description:
The Moulin de Mombreux is a delightful place for a short break, lying as it does on the banks "Le Blequin", a stream amid gently undulating hills and fields.
The original mill building dates from the 18th Century and houses a charming lounge and bar with an open fireplace where log fires roar in cooler weather, the old mill wheel and the gastronomic restaurant, with a comfortable rustic atmosphere, reached via a spiral staircase, on the first floor of the building, offering views over the stream to the fields beyond.
The cuisine of Mr Gaudry, chef and owner, provides an excellent reason for staying here. The bedrooms are tastefully designed in the classic style of the region and all have mini-bar, telephone, television, bath and wc and a separate spacious dressing room.
There is also a bar service here and a breakfast room.

- Coupole d'Helfaut-Wizernes-Saint-Omer
A gigantic rocket launch pad turned into a memorial.
A symbol of Nazi madness, this former V2 rocket launch pad has been turned into a Centre devoted to the history of war and rockets. The tour starts in a railway tunnel and continues along underground galleries intended to store rockets, leading into a huge dome weighing 55 000t. Two exhibitions present German secret weapons and the life of the local population in northern France from 1940 to 1944. On display are a V1 flying bomb and a genuine V2 rocket.
- Cathedrale Notre-Dame Saint-Omer
The most beautiful religious building of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
In the heart of the peaceful chaplains' quarter, formerly known as the ?Notre-Dame cloister,? this cathedral is remarkable for the majesty and breadth of its construction. It contains numerous art works: the organ case work, the cenotaph, the mausoleum, floor roundels, and an astronomical clock whose mechanism dates from 1558. As in the basilica in St-Quentin, note the maze traced in the middle of the chancel floor. This pilgrimage path was called "the Jerusalem league."
- Hotel Sandelin -Saint-Omer
You get to this Hotel built in 1777, through a doorway closed by a Louis XV grille.
Accessible to people of restricted mobility.
In the rooms overlooking the garden, the carved woodwork and the 18C fireplaces are set off by an extremely beautiful grouping of Louis XV furniture and panelling. The corridor from the chapel leads to the Treasure Room, where the famous 12C gilded and enamelled Pied de Croix de St-Bertin is on display, a masterpiece of the local goldsmith's art. Among the ceramics, an exceptional collection of Delft (750 pieces) is worthy of attention. Numerous Flemish primitives and smaller 17C works.
- Library - Saint-Omer
Manuscripts, incunabula and carvings.
Accessible to people of restricted mobility.
It contains 70,000 volumes, including more than 1600 manuscripts (11C Life of Saint-Omer) and more than 120 incunabula (the famous Gutenberg Bible). The carvings are from the Saint-Bertin abbey.
- St Sepulchre's Church - Saint-Omer
A Church hall consecrated in 1387.
This owes its name (a rare one, there are only seven churches in France with this name) to the participation of the men of St Malo on the Crusades. The doorway, a masterpiece of the joiner's art comes from St Bertin. In the chancel there are some attractive stained-glass windows from the 19C.
Museum of the Augustines - Hazebrouck
Rubens and valiant Roland in an Augustine convent.
In the old, 17C Augustine convent, a reconstitution of a traditional Flemish kitchen and objects recalling the town's past. Flemish and Dutch paintings in the cloister (Rubens, Van Dyck) and 19C and 20C French paintings (Theodore Rousseau and Bouguereau). However, the stars of the show are the town's giants, the Valiant Roland of Hazebrouck, his wife, Toria and daughter Babe-Tisje.
