- Church of St Hildevert - Gournay-en-Bray
The first attempts at human representation in the Romanesque era.
They can be seen at the far end of the right-hand aisle, on the ancient capitals around St Joseph's altar. The church is principally 12C with the South side nave dating from the 11C. It also contains ancient polychrome wood statues of the Virgin Mary and St Hildevert (15C). Considerable restoration work has been done on the 12C Gothic doorways.
- Castle and sculpture park - Vascoeuil
A centre for contemporary art and a memorial to the writer Jules Michelet.
The Chateau de Vascoeuil was saved from falling to ruin to become a reputed cultural centre. It houses the musee Michelet, a museum with a collection of numerous souvenirs of the historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874) and his family (portraits, posters, texts). His office has been reconstructed at the top of the castle tower. The building (14-16C) and its superb dovecote (17C) are the backdrop for interesting contemporary art exhibitions. Finally, don't miss the sculpture park, where many illustrious figures, such as Volti, Dali, Leger and Vasarely, have left their mark.
- Chateau fort - Gisors
A magnificent example of 11C and 12C Norman military architecture.
Built back in 1097 by William II, King of England and son of William the Conqueror, this castle was further fortified in the 12C by Henry II before being taken by Philippe Auguste of France in 1193. During the Hundred Years War the castle changed hands several times before returning to the French crown in 1449. A public garden has been laid out inside the fortified perimeter where the 11C keep still stands, flanked by a watchtower and surrounded by a sturdy wall. There is a fine view of Gisors from the terrace.
