Local Attractions:
- Roman theatre and amphitheatre - Lillebonne
Memories of gladiator fights.
It dates back to the 1C, but was remodelled and extended in the 2C. You can get a good overview of the edifice from Place F?lix-Faure. The main arena has the usual shape of such buildings in North-Western Gaul. The crowd occupied the terraces of the cavea, divided into an upper and lower maenianum. The entrance was on the western side. Spectators followed a circular gallery and the secondary vomitoriums to reach the terraces.
- Bridge of Normandy (Tancarville) - Honfleur
This bridge is both a feat of engineering and a work of art.
The Normandy Bridge, 2 141m long, designed by Mr Vijoleux, was seen as a milestone at the time of its construction in 1995 because it set the record for the longest cable-stayed bridge. This steel and concrete mass, which defies the laws of gravity, has a surprisingly light structure and is extremely stable, capable of withstanding winds of up to 440kph. A sophisticated lighting system, designed by Yann Kersale, called Rhapsody in Blue and White, turns the construction into an amazing sight every night.
- The Abbey - Le Bec-Hellouin
A graceful, vast Benedictine abbey.
The new abbey-church was laid out in the former refectory. An 11C sarcophagus houses the body of Herluin, who founded the abbey. The old abbey-church was demolished in the 19C and the 15C tower is its biggest remaining element. The cloister is one of the first built in Classical style in France and has an Italian-style terrace. It was inspired by the Bramante cloister, on Monte Cassino. From the St. Nicholas Tower, you can see a view over the Bec valley and abbey building.
- Victor Hugo Museum - Villequier
Souvenirs of Leopoldine, Victor Hugo's beloved daughter.
In the former house of the Vacqueries, a rich family of Le Havre shipowners, the museum illustrates the life of Leopoldine Hugo. Letters from Leopoldine to her family, portraits and family furniture and views of Normandy of the day illustrate the peaceful times until her death on 4 September 1843. Apart from the Contemplations poems where Victor Hugo expresses his grief, there are also a number of drawings by the poet.
