All the charm of a historic district encircled by ramparts.
It is possible to walk right round the fortifications of the old town of Angouleme. As you do so, you will notice that the north is a maze of narrow streets, while the south is cut by spacious avenues lined by dignified mansions. As you stroll along, look out for the Cathedrale St-Pierre and its lovely facade decorated in the Poitiers style, and stop at the Centre national de la bande dessin?e et de l'image (Comic Strip Centre) before venturing into the African and Oceanic wings of the Museum of Fine Arts.
- St.Peter's Cathedral
Its sculpted facade and the interior are impressive.
St.Peter's Cathedral dates from the 12thC. The Poitiers style sculptured mural that makes up the stunning fa?ade in which more than 70 characters, sculptures and bas-reliefs depict the Final judgement. The inside is highlighted by its sheer size.
- Municipal museum of Fine-Arts
Beautiful collections of African and oceanic art in this old bishopric.
This museum installed in the old bishopric (12C, modified in 16C) displays remarkable collections of African and Oceanian art (traditional small statues from the Congo) and a masterpiece of Celitic plate work, the helmet of Agris. There are also some Italian, Flemish, French and Charentes paintings to complete the collection. As you are in the town which is devoted to Cartoons, the museum exhibits a set of drawing boards which children can work on to keep them busy during the visit.
- Museum of the Le Nil paper factory
After the visit, paper will be no secret to you
Accessible to people of restricted mobility. In this Bardou-Le Nil paper factory, which specialises in producung cigarette paper, you will see one of the six mill wheels which used to power the process until the advent of electricity. Here you will learn all about the traditional activities of Angouleme, which the regions pure waters lent aided. At the ?mock factory section? you will you will learn all about the stages of paper and cardboard production.
- National Centre for Cartoons and the Image
A museum where all the big names of the cartoon world are present.
The playful architecture of Roland Castro is a combination of metal, glass and parts of industrial buildings from early 20 C. Inside, there is a medialibrary which is the National Cartoon library, accommodating all French cartoon material (albums and magazines) dating back to 1946. The museum pays hommage to important Cartoonists (comic strips and original drawings), from Pinchon (Becassine) to Tardi, not forgetting Forton (Les Pied Nickeles), Herge (Tintin), Franquin (Spirou), Goscinny and Uderzo (Asterix)...
- Town Hall
This town hall was built in 1868 by Paul Abadie, the architect of the Sacre-Coeur in Paris. In design it is a mixture of Gothic and Rennaissance, situated on the site of the former Chateau of the counts of Angoul?me. The only remains of the chateau is the many-sided tower (the old donjon is 13 and 14C) and a round 15C tower in which Marguerite of Angoul?me was born.

This mammoth development encompasses training centres and a noteworthy school of the cinema industry , and a centre for specialist businesses working in the animated image field. It was built in the best possible place, by the River Charante, near the CNBD... and is provided with a reproduction of the rocket drawn by Herge which allowed Tintin, Captain Haddock and the Professor Nimbus to walk on the moon well before Neil Armstrong.
