Local Attractions:

Saint-Martin-de-Re
The island's capital, formerly a sizeable military stronghold and a busy port.
This charming town with its narrow cobbled streets has probably not changed that much since the golden era of Louis XIV. Its fortifications are early 17C but were extensively modified by Vauban. The harbour is unusual because the dock extends into the former fishermen's district, now lined in shops and restaurants, creating almost an islet in the heart of the town.

La Rochelle
- Minimes port
The largest pleasure port in Europe on the Atlantic. Three floating basins in deep water (Lazaret, Bout-Blanc et Marillac) can hold 3200 keels of all types. It was the first yachting port on this side of the Atlantic.

Miniature Museum
The dream of the incredibly small. Accessible to people of restricted mobility.
Models of lorries and cars, a submarine, some railway tracks, a reconstructed naval battle, some steam locomotives, the world of transport in miniature.

- Robot Museum
A sumptuous production. Accessible to people of restricted mobility.
Installed among sumptuous decoration in a musical atmosphere, 300 moving figures rival each other in ingenuity to attract the visitors' attention. This is an astounding place with automatons of amazing realism and some highly successful reconstructions such as that of Montmartre square.

- Orbigny-Bernon museum
The collections on an 18C shipowner.
Amongst these collections, put together by an 18C shipowner, you'll find mementoes of the sieges of La Rochelle, documents evoking the town's prosperity and the intellectual life of the 18C. There is a wonderful series of ceramics tracing the history of local pottery and Chinese porcelain from the Song to the Qing periods.

- Chain Tower
The chain used to attach Pantagruel to his cradle.
Formerly used as a powder magazine, this tower owes its name to the large chains that used to link it at night to the St Nicholas tower. This chain, if Rabelais is to be believed, used to tie down Pantagruel in his cradle! Today the tower contains a museum devoted to the siege of La Rochelle.

- Grevin Museum
History and legends of La Rochelle. 15 panels show the finest hours of La Rochelle and the people who have left their mark on the city: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richelieu, Jean Guiton... in a mixture of history and legends.

Getting There:

By car: La Rochelle (N237) then D735 turn left on D 201 avenue des Dunes
