Aix-les-Bains
- National spas
Here, you can visit the caves where the spring water bubbles out.
These spas are installed in a building which was inaugurated in 1864 and completed in 1934 with the addition of The New Spas (les Nouveaux Thermes). They contain a source of sulphur and alum. As a simple visitor you will appreciate the modern installations before going down to the caves where one of the watersprings is contained and then visit a vast underground room where the Roman traces of a caldarium remain.
- Cliff-edge
The property developers of the Belle Epoque give themselves whole heartedly to this cliff-edge area, which dominates the resort and the lake. You can see prestigious hotels (Royal, Splendid, Panoramic, Bernascon) and a fairytale chateau (The chateau of King's Rock (Roche du Roi)) - which the casino director lives in. A number of these buildings are the work of Jules Pin Senior (1850-1934).
- Archaeoloy and prehistory museum
This museum set in the temple of Diana (temple de Diane) displays glass and pottery lapidary pieces, coins, and a superb marble bath tub, all from the Gallo-Roman period. Also note the handsome torso, probably belonging to the statue of an emperor.
- Grand circle Casino
Opened in 1883, the casino symbolises the pomp of the Grande era.
Even if it means losing a few chips, you must visit this casino built in 1849, the halls of which were opened in 1883. The mosaic decorated ceiling of the games halls by the Italian Salvati (who restored the San Marco mosaics in Venice) is spellbindingly beautiful. The theatre, with a Belle ?poque decor, perpetuates the memory of the divas who performed there, like the great Sarah Bernardt.
- Faure Museum
Remarkable collection of paintings and sculptures
Accessible to people of restricted mobility. Bequeathed by Doctor Faure in 1942, this remarkable collection of paintings and sculptures represents the impressionist school particularly well. On display, works by Degas, Pissarro, Sisley, Cezanne and Vuillard follow the precursors of impressionism, Corot, Jongkind and Boudin. Sculpture-wise, there are works by Carpeaux and Rodin. On the top floor objects recall Lamartines' stay here.
- Aquarium
To better acquaint yourselves with the fish in lake Bourget, you have two options. The first is to take a fishing rod and be very patient. The second is to visit this aquarium which displays more than fifty freshwater fish in their natural habitat.
- Lac du Bourget
The blue waters and green slopes of this idyllic setting form the backdrop to a spa resort and a host of typical Savoyard villages.
Flanked by the steep slopes of Mont du Chat and Mont de la Chambotte, France's largest natural lake is famous for the changing hues of its waters, which range from dark blue to bright turquoise. Subject to strong gusts of wind and lined by steep banks, it is not necessarily the easiest lake to sail on. However, a tour of its shores will provide the chance to admire not only the lake, but also the superb abbey of Hautecombe and the old border town of Chanaz, as well as taking you up the Col de Sapenay, which commands a great view from the Restaurant La Chambotte.
- Royal Abbe de Hautecombe - Conjux
A superb place of worship in an unforgettable setting.
This romantically-situated abbey is where many members of the House of Savoie chose to be buried. 42 princes and princesses rest here, from Umberto III, who died in 1189, to the last king of Italy (1869-1947), as well as Charles-F?lix and Marie-Christine. The latter were responsible for restoring the abbey from 1824 to 1843 and also for reviving the tradition of being buried there. The abbey, entirely restored in neo-Gothic style in the 19C, stands on the grandiose site of a promontory that dominates the Lac du Bourget.
