Hotellerie Le Beau Rivage - Condrieu, Rhone - Alpes
Address:
2 rue du Beau Rivage, Condrieu, France
Description:
This place originated around 1900 as a simple inn that offered food and wine to fishermen who traveled from Lyon to the well-stocked waters of this section of the Rhone. It has evolved into a stylish, nostalgic enclave. The rooms are well furnished; some are larger than you may expect. Most come with a tub/shower combination.
The Rhone passes by the dining terrace. The traditional cuisine is exceptional. Try quenelles of pike, stuffed snails with new potatoes, and delicious supreme of pigeon on a platter with confit of pigeon, roasted foie gras and turnips.
The Cotes du Rhone wines complement the food well.
A mellow atmosphere bathed in light on the banks of the Rhone, terraces overhanging the water, the enchantment of a garden and its secret shady nooks, the particular charm of a former fisherman's house... so many sensations, making the Beau Rivage just the place to enjoy a very special life-style.

Site - Saint-Romain-en-Gal
An admirable site revealing the daily life of the Romans.
The 3ha-site contains Roman vestiges in five, irregularly-shaped areas. Rue du Portique, Rue des Thermes and Rue du Commerce are the main thoroughfares of the town. The entrance is dominated by the House of the Ocean Gods dating from 180AD. This house, with a famous mosaic to be found in the museum, is embellished by two gardens. The Wrestlers' Baths are a remarkable sign of Roman influence. The Caldarium, tepidarium and frigidarium are the principal rooms of this residential building. Its painted murals are kept in the museum: naked athletes are depicted in scenes of hand-to-hand wrestling, boxing, all-in wrestling and throwing the discus. Trading activities, located in several areas of the site, were considerable. The horrea in the northwest of the town were vast storage places or attics. A multitude of vestiges of the craftsmen's quarter located at the crossroads of Rue du Commerce and Rue des Thermes can still be seen: pottery, plumbing and dyeing. Weaving, leatherwork and basketmaking were popular crafts.

Discovered in 1922, it is one of the biggest of the Gallo-Roman period. 13 500 spectators could sit down on the 46 tier rows situated over a series of well-kept arched galleries, and which crowned a temple. Notice a copy of a wonderful animal frieze (the original is in the museum) on the base of the stage floor. Currently, it is the setting for the Jazz Festival.

Ideal for holidays in the country.
A watershed at Chabouret Pass (1 363m), Mont Pilat rises between the Loire and the Rhone Valleys. The Regional Park created in 1974 covers some 160 000 acres of varied landscapes. Towards the Rhone, the orchards and vineyards (such as the famous Cote-Rotie) give way to pastures on the plateaux, and to forests as the altitude increases. The cool forests of fir trees, fast-flowing streams and vast meadows make it very popular with walkers.
