Village Life in Languedoc Roussilon
Welcome to your village sojourn in the old Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France with your hosts Jennifer, Val and Jeanne. Four guests will experience a totally relaxed and unstructured holiday in a typical wine country heritage listed village, Saint-Chinian.
Don't like to use hostels, be on your own at B&B's or join big organised tours? Then this could be the getaway for you.
The beautiful Languedoc-Roussillon is not besieged by tourists and is the sunniest part of France, with 300 days of sunshine a year. Join us in exploring the villages and byways of this stunning region without a rigid timetable or crowds.
Just four people will join us for a ten day sojourn, discovering the little explored wine region of the Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France. You will be greeted at the Montpellier airport or Beziers train station, and taken by private car to the village of Saint-Chinian to join us in a charming three bedroom 19th century village terrace. Meals will be prepared from local produce sourced directly from the growers. Special diets, vegetarians and vegans will be catered for.
With Saint-Chinian as our base for the next ten days, day trips will be decided amongst the guests, with Jennifer and Val or Jeanne making suggestions and taking you there. Val will help with some conversational French over breakfast and act as translator as needed during our wanderings through this beautiful region.
Enjoy the experience of authentic village life at your own pace. Go off on your own, rent a bike or take the frequent buses knowing that you will be looked after, your laundry done, and meals provided. Need a picnic lunch? Just ask.
Your sojourn in the village of Saint-Chinian and exploring the beautiful and interesting region of the Languedoc-Roussillon will have the added benefits of flexibility, of being tailored to suit your interests and of being in a very small group.
Guests will decide together which trips to take, what to see and experience, with suggestions by Jennifer and Val or Jeanne. You can visit markets, taste local wines at wineries, enjoy charming out of the way villages and towns nearby, walk through gardens, visit hot springs, Cathars fortresses, art galleries, olive producers, as well as the lesser known towns on the Mediterranean coast.
Walkers will find beautiful trails to explore, and the extensive Haut-Languedoc Regional Park boasts a plateau of lakes with quaint villages to visit. The near-by Orb River also offers kayaking opportunities and runs through beautiful gorges complete with wild mountain goats. A diversity of scenery from coastal beaches and wetlands, through wine growing country to the craggy hinterland will be yours to discover.
Favourite towns to visit are Albi, home of the Toulouse- Lautrec museum, Carcassonne, the Cathars walled fortress, and Narbonne with its Les Halles Markets.
Guests can choose from a variety of outings. Take a look at a typical example of what to expect in this very flexible package.
If there is a place we haven’t mentioned that you’d like to see, or something you’d like to do, send us your request and we’ll see how we can incorporate it into your stay.
Saint-Chinian is a charming village in the department of Hérault, situated at the edge of the Black Mountains and the Haut-Languedoc Regional Park, just a 40 minute drive to the Mediterranean. Founded by Benedictine monks in the 9th Century it eventually became the centre of the wine region by the same name. It is central to the area, with twice weekly markets held in a tree lined central square, selling produce, clothes and souvenirs from the surrounding region.
Saint-Chinian has five restaurants and bars, butchers, banks, patisseries, newsagent, and a supermarket. You can find an open air swimming pool, tennis courts, cycle hire, doctors, hairdressers and pharmacists. Vineyards adjoin, and a clear stream, the Vernazobre, runs through the village.
We will be staying in a typical terrace ‘maison de village’ which is only steps away from the main village square and shops. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, a TV, a computer, and a lovely outside terrace for dining or sun bathing.
Expect to feel much more relaxed, while still enjoying a bit of pampering and a comfortable village house to come back to for some TV, reading, or a snooze.
Saint-Chinian is located in the department of Hérault, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Southern France. It is close to the town of Beziers, which has a railway station, and 40 minutes to the airport at Montpellier.
